What is a Disc Herniation?

A disc herniation occurs when the soft inner gel of the disc, the nucleus pulposus, pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior called the annulus fibrosus. Symptoms of Disc Bulges, Herniations, & Sciatica 

As the disc bulges, you might feel sharp, stabbing pain, especially when bending forward, sitting, coughing, or sneezing. The pain comes from the disc itself. If the bulge breaks through, it often hits the lumbar spine nerve, becoming the sciatic nerve.
